LEXINGTON, Ky.- Williams News passed the leaders on the last turn for a half-length victory in the $113,400 Grade III Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland on Wednesday. The 6-year-old son of Alleged was last soon after the start of the 1 1/2 -mile turf race under jockey Robby Albarado, but took the lead with three-16ths of a mile remaining and held off Gritty Sandie to finish in 2:29 for the win. Gritty Sandie held on for second, a half-length in front of 6-5 favorite Craigsteel in the field of nine 4-year-olds and up. Williams News won for the sixth time in 31 career starts and earned $70,308 for On Target Racing Stable while increasing his career earnings to $857,179. Williams News paid $7.80, $4.80 and $3.40. Gritty Sandie returned $12.40 and $6.20, while Craigsteel paid $2.60. | |
