ARCADIA, Calif. -- Perfect timing put Senure and jockey Alex Solis in the winner's circle on Sunday.

Using a remarkable turn of foot, Senure passed pacesetter Penamacor in midstretch and caught White Heart in the final sixteenth to win the $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship at Santa Anita.

The Hirsch was California's last major prep to the Breeders' Cup Turf at Belmont Park on Oct. 27 and a race that trainer Bobby Frankel said Senure had to win to be considered for the $2 million race.

For awhile, it appeared that the Hirsch would end in an upset.

Penamacor, the winner of the 2000 Chilean Derby, led from the start and was as many as 12 lengths clear on the backstretch. He still led by that margin at the top of the stretch but noticeably shortened stride in the final furlong.

Senure, who was fourth on the backstretch, rallied wide and passed Penamacor to his outside. White Heart passed the longtime leader on the rail and led in the final furlong, but Senure took over in the final 100 yards and won by a head, finishing 1 1/4 miles on turf in 1:59.47.

Solis said he followed White Heart to the top of the stretch.

"I got Senure out at the three-sixteenths pole and he finished strong," Solis said. "My main concern was to keep my horse relaxed."

White Heart finished three-quarters of a length in front of Cagney, who was followed by Kudos, Penamacor and El Bueno.

Senure has won 2 of 4 starts this year. Owned by Juddmonte Farms, the 5-year-old Senure finished second in the Grade 1 United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park on July 1 but was placed first after With Anticipation was disqualified for interference.
