ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Beat Hollow wouldn't allow himself to be beaten Saturday, winning a thrilling three-horse finish at the Arlington Million over Sarafan and Forbidden Apple.
Beat Hollow, the British-bred pre-race favorite owned by Juddmonte Farms, held off Sarafan by a head. Forbidden Apple, which jumped out early, was third by a nose in the 1 1/4-mile turf race. "We had a nice spot when we turned for home, and it was up to him,'' winning jockey Jerry Bailey said. "I was concentrating on Forbidden Apple, and I wanted to stay close enough to beat him.'' Two years ago, Bailey and trainer Bobby Frankel teamed up for an Arlington Million win on Chester House, a much easier victory than the one they produced Saturday. "I want to thank my blacksmith for shoeing him and making him win by that inch,'' Frankel said with a smile. "It was a great finish, and thank heavens I won. I'm not a good loser. I've lost a few like this. He's a very, very good horse.'' Frankel added that Beat Hollow likely will cut back to a mile for the Breeders' Cup at Arlington Park in October. "He'll be a better horse going a mile than he is a mile and a quarter. That's about the extent he wants to go,'' Bailey said. "He tried hard, and that's why he was able to pull out the win today.'' Beat Hollow won in 2 minutes, 2.94 seconds and paid $3.40, $2.40 and $2.20. Sarafan returned $3.40 and $2.80, and Forbidden Apple paid $2.80 to show. "I was in stalking position. Going to the far turn, Jerry had a chance to go on and I had to wait a little bit. My horse likes to be ridden that way,'' Sarafan jockey Corey Nakatani said. "I think the next time we meet, it will be a great race.'' Jose Santos, bidding for his third win at the Million, said Forbidden Apple did everything he asked before coming up short. "The distance from third to first was about a neck. He was trying hard, did everything in his power,'' Santos said. "It was a beautiful race.'' Earlier in the $700,000 Beverly D. for fillies and mares, Golden Apples overtook defending champion England's Legend in the stretch and held off a late charge by favorite Astra.
Owned by Gary Tanaka and ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Golden Apples won in 1:54.86. It was a possible preview for the Breeders' Cup in October. "She's exceptional,'' trainer Ben Cecil said. '' I've always thought we had the best filly in the barn. She's been unlucky to lose a couple of races this year, and now she's proved it.'' Frankel got his second close win later Saturday when Chiselling caught up and passed Jazz Beat to win the $400,000 Secretariat Stakes for 3-year-olds by a nose in a photo finish. Chiselling returned $9.20, 4.60, 3.60, Jazz Beat $5.60, $3.80 and Extra Check $5.40. | |
