BANNING, Calif. -- Hall of Fame jockey Johnny Longden, who rode Count Fleet to the Triple Crown in 1943, has suffered a stroke.

Longden, 95, was resting Sunday at his home about 90 miles east of Los Angeles.

``He's comfortable, he's not in pain, but he's weak and he sleeps a lot,'' his wife, Cathy, said.

Longden became thoroughbred racing's winningest rider in 1956 when he broke the record of 4,870 set by Sir Gordon Richards. He rode his 5,000th winner in 1957, and was the first jockey to reach 6,000 wins.

After retiring from riding, Longden trained Majestic Prince. The colt won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in 1969, but was beaten in the Belmont Stakes.

Jockey Bill Shoemaker surpassed Longden's record when he won his 6,033rd race in 1970. Shoemaker's record was later broken by Laffit Pincay Jr. in 1999.
