SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Lion Heart and Purge, the two main speed horses in the field, will line-up side by side in Saturday's Grade 1, $1 million Travers Stakes Saturday in Saratoga. Lion Heart, the Haskell Invitational winner, drew post 2 and was installed by morning-line maker Don LaPlace as the 3-1 co-second choice behind Purge, the Jim Dandy winner, who drew post 3 and was made the 2-1 favorite. Birdstone, the Belmont Stakes winner, drew post 5 and was also made 3-1. Birdstone, who is making his first start since upending Smarty Jones's Triple Crown bid in the Belmont, joins The Cliff's Edge and Sir Shackleton from the Nick Zito barn. The three horses will run uncoupled in the wagering. Suave, the Northern Dancer Stakes winner, and Eddington round out the seven-horse field. LaPlace said he made Purge the favorite "off his last race right here at this racetrack. I also thought he was a good horse from last year when he broke his maiden here." Though Lion Heart is a multiple Grade 1 winner and finished second in the Kentucky Derby, LaPlace believes he will face a tougher test in the Travers than he did in the Haskell. "I don't think he beat those solid Grade 1 3-year-olds that he'll face on Saturday," LaPlace said. Trainer Patrick Biancone said bettors who wager on Lion Heart, will get their money's worth. "If you put your money on him, he's going to defend your money till the winning post," Biancone said. The Travers will be race 11 of 12 on Saturday's card and will be shown live on ESPN during a two-hour broadcast. Field for the 135th running of the Travers Stakes
