HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Host stayed ahead of Navesink River by a neck to win the $100,000 Grade 3 Mac Diarmida Handicap at Gulfstream Park on Sunday.
Burning Sun finished third in the field of 12 older horses.
Ridden by Javier Castellano, Host ran 1 3/8 miles on the grass in 2:12 4/5 and paid $25, $11.60 and $6.40. Navesink River paid $12.80 and $7.60 and Burning Sun paid $2.80 to show.
The race was marred by a spill. In Hand appeared to lose his footing and fell, unseating rider Gary Boulanger. Then Macaw tripped over In Hand, dropping jockey Eddie Castro.
In Hand was euthanized and Boulanger was taken to Hollywood Memorial Hospital for treatment of cuts to his head. Neither Macaw nor Castro was injured.
The 5-year-old In Hand had won five of 18 starts and $222,199.
This was the first stakes victory for Host, the 5-year-old son of Tabasco Cat, who is owned by Cesar Kimmel, P.R. Solondz and CG Zoe Stable. | |
