Meetyoouathebrig wins Derby Trial

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Meetyouathebrig opened the Churchill Downs meet on a sunny, breezy Saturday with a solid victory in the Derby Trial.

None of the 11 3-year-olds who contested the one-mile Trial is expected to start in the 127th Kentucky Derby.

Trainer Ken McPeek had said Gift Of The Eagle could earn a start in the Derby by winning the Trial.

"The question has been answered," McPeek said after Gift Of The Eagle finished sixth.

Meetyouathebrig, ridden by Robby Albarado, swept by the leaders on the outside with about an eighth of a mile remaining and won by 6 1-4 lengths over Dream Run. He was 1 1-2 lengths ahead One By The Knows. Silvertongue Fox finished another head back.

Meetyouathebrig carried 122 pounds over the mile in 1:36 2-5 and paid $18, $8 and $5.60. Dream Run returned $4.40 and $8.20, and One By The Knows paid $7.60.

Meetyouathebrig and One By The Knows are trained by Elliott Walden, but they were not coupled in the betting because of different ownership.

The winner earned $72,602 for owners Frank L. Mansell and James H. Stone. It was the colt's first victory in three starts this year and fourth in eight career races.

Firststatedeposit, Dream Run and One By The Knows led the field almost from the start until the quarter pole. Then in the run to the wire, the Trial became a one-horse race.

A crowd 16,004 attended the opening.
