Blistering works for Point Given, Congaree

Trainer Bob Bafferts's Congaree covered his opening half-mile in 47 seconds.
Trainer Bob Baffert's hand for Saturday's Kentucky Derby grew even more imposing Monday as both Point Given and Congaree posted sizzling workouts at Churchill Downs. Both Baffert-trained colts reeled off 5-furlong workouts of 58.20 seconds, according to Churchill Downs clockers.

Also on Monday, A P Valentine, winner of the 2000 Champagne Stakes, worked five furlongs in 59 seconds and longshot hope Arctic Boy covered the same distance in 1:01.

The Thoroughbred Corporation's Point Given, the favorite for the Derby off a landslide victory in the Santa Anita Derby, covered the first four furlongs in 47.60 before firing off a blistering 10.60 seconds final furlong. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:10.80.

Stonerside Stable's Congaree, the Wood Memorial winner, covered his opening half-mile in 47 seconds en route to his 58.20 seconds clocking and galloped out in 1:10.60 for six furlongs.

A P Valentine was timed in 46 seconds for his first half-mile, while Artic Boy galloped out six furlongs in a slow, compared to Point Given and Congaree, 1:13.40.
