The following is a breakdown of the names of the Kentucky Derby winners from 1960 on. I've chosen to do the analysis covering the racing only in my lifetime. I've chosen this route because to look at the entire history of the Derby would have taken too much time.

From 1960 through 2001 there are 43 winners listed. I count both Dancer's Image and Forward Pass in 1968 because I feel like it.

The runaway winning letter is S. Secretariat was the first horse whose name begins with the letter S to win in my lifetime, Silver Charm the last. S has ten winners in my lifetime. (See chart below.)

More detailed anyalysis is required once more on the letter S. Horses whose names begin with the letter S not only have won 10 Kentucky Derbys in my lifetime but the letter S is the only one found at the beginning of Derby winners three years in a row in my lifetime.
