LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Mayakovsky won't run in the Kentucky
Derby, trainer Patrick Biancone said Wednesday.
Biancone and Demi O'Byrne, who manages the racing interests of
Mayakovsky's owner, Michael Tabor, made the decison before calling
off the Matty G colt's scheduled five-furlong workout.
Biancone said Mayakovsky might race in the Preakness Stakes on
May 18 or the Met Mile the following weekend.
The original plan was to run Mayakovsky in the Derby Trial and
then point for the Preakness, but the colt was scratched because of
wet weather.
That made the Saturday's Kentucky Derby a possibility, although
Biancone wasn't sure whether Mayakovsky could handle the 1\-mile
distance at Churchill Downs.
"He was always a reserve quarterback," Biancone said. "We
were hoping he would mature enough to run on Saturday.
Unfortunately, the race is coming too early for him at the stage
he's at.
"He's a very good horse. But he'll watch this game and maybe
play in the next one."
