USC athletic director Pat Haden made it clear that interim coach Ed Orgeron is on his radar for the Trojans' full-time job.
"What Ed has done has been absolutely remarkable," Haden said Tuesday night on KFWB-AM. "He is clearly in our eyesight. We understand. It's not just the fans. We're sophisticated enough and know enough about this to understand the attributes that he has, and he's a known quantity."
Orgeron publicly expressed interest in the full-time job after the Trojans upset Stanford on Saturday.
"I want to be the head coach at USC," Orgeron said Monday during an appearance on ESPNU's "CFB Daily." "I love being a head coach. I think that it's something I'm able to do, and do well. And I want to be the head coach at USC when I get the chance. I think I can perform on a very high basis to do what the Trojan family wants me to do."
After the victory over Stanford, Orgeron said he received congratulatory messages from Marcus Allen, Anthony Munoz, Pete Carroll and others with connections to the program. That support has reached Haden's office, as well.
"I had 136 pro-Coach O emails today," Haden said. "Those were just emails. That doesn't count the tweets, letters and phone calls."
The Trojans are 5-1 since Orgeron took over after Lane Kiffin was fired. And with games remaining against Colorado and crosstown rival UCLA, the team remains in contention for a spot in the Pac-12 title game.
And yet, Haden -- who already has interviewed Denver Broncos defensive coordinator and former USC All-American Jack Del Rio -- is preaching patience when it comes to finding a permanent coach.
Del Rio is 2-0 as interim coach in place of a recuperating John Fox.
"My job is to find the best coach of USC, not just for this year, for five or six or eight games or next year, but hopefully for five, 10 or 15 years," Haden said. "The good news is we had a lot of time to think about this thing and to really open the universe to potential opportunities because this is a really good job.
"We're going to go through this process we have and, at the end of the day, I think we'll have a rational decision."
