It's now or never for the organization's lone Australian player. Thompson is out of options, meaning to demote him again would expose him to waivers and other teams could claim him. Given his success last year (0.61 ERA in Triple-A, 1.37 ERA in the majors), that would be likely. He's in the most heated competition of the spring with other young relievers like Jason Bulger, who also is out of options.

It's crucial that he hit well enough to keep his excellent defense in the lineup and tuck Vernon Wells and Torii Hunter into the corners, where they can save their legs for hitting.
