Mariners sign Hong-Chih Kuo

The Seattle Mariners have signed former Dodgers left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo and ex-Blue Jays right-hander Shawn Camp to one-year deals.

Both signed major league contracts and will be added to the Mariners' 40-man roster.

Kuo has passed his physical, which was not a small hurdle for a pitcher who has spent time on the disabled list with elbow, back and anxiety troubles over the past two seasons.

The Dodgers non-tendered Kuo in December, making him a free agent. He had been in the Dodgers' organization since signing with the club in July of 1999.

Kuo, who turns 31 in July, made the All-Star team in 2010, when he led all big league relievers with a 1.20 ERA. But he had a 9.00 ERA in 40 appearances last year while dealing with anxiety issues.

In seven major league seasons, all with the Dodgers, Kuo is 13-7 with 13 saves and a 3.73 career ERA in 292 1/3 innings pitched.

Camp appeared in 67 games for the Blue Jays in 2011, finishing the season with a 6-3 record and a 4.21 ERA. He has appeared in 432 career games with Kansas City, Tampa Bay and Toronto. His 196 appearances over the past three seasons are the third-most in the AL over that span.

Catcher Chris Gimenez and outfielder Mike Wilson were designated for assignment to make room for Kuo and Camp, the Mariners said.
