LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers utility player Jerry Hairston Jr. will undergo surgery on his left hip in the coming weeks and miss the remainder of the season, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly announced Wednesday night.

Hairston has been on the disabled list since Aug. 12.

Hairston, 36, was batting .276 with four home runs and 26 RBIs in 78 games, and had played third base, second base, shortstop and left field. Depth is becoming an issue for the Dodgers. Juan Uribe, batting .182, pinch hit in all three games as the Dodgers were swept out of first place by the San Francisco Giants, culminating with Wednesday's 8-4 loss.
