Pujols will DH and remain "cautious" on the basepaths for at least another few days, but felt comfortable enough after going through a series of tests before the game to step back into the lineup.
"It's not that I'm a fast runner anyway," he joked. "But running in my case is something that I can normally do. But right now, I have to be careful until I feel comfortable to let it go."
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he wasn't sure how long Pujols will be running the bases with the restrictions on, but didn't seem concerned they would affect Pujols or the team's offense.
The news wasn't as positive on reliever Scott Downs, who was placed on the Family Medical Emergency List on Tuesday. Scioscia confirmed Downs had returned home to Kentucky on Sunday night at the end of the Angels last road trip. Scioscia could provide no additional information except that it was a "family matter" and he wasn't sure when Downs would return.
Outfielder Kole Calhoun was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake City in a corresponding roster move.
Albert Pujols returned to the Angels' lineup Tuesday after sitting out the last four games with a calf injury.
