Dodgers bring back Bobby Abreu

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers called up outfielder Bobby Abreu from Triple-A Albuquerque, the team announced Sunday.

The Dodgers got creative in opening up a 40-man roster spot for Abreu. They called up right-handed pitcher Chris Withrow from Double-A Chattanooga before placing him on the 60-day disabled list.

"I'm glad (Abreu) is here," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "It gives us another guy off the bench that's been around and is going to be comfortable up there and know what he's doing."

Abreu posted a .353 batting average and a .450 on-base percentage in five games with Triple-A Albuquerque after being designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Aug. 1, a move made after the team traded for Shane Victorino.

Abreu could have left the Dodgers at the time but accepted his assignment with the belief that he would be called up in September.

"I like it here, they treat me good," Abreu said. "I understood the situation with Victorino. They had to open a spot for him. It was no problem. We talked about and I thought I would be back here in September."

The 38-year-old Abreu originally signed with the Dodgers as a free agent on May 4 and batted .251 with two homers and 17 RBIs in 70 games, including a .316 mark (6 for 19) as a pinch hitter.

Abreu, who said he would like to play two to three more seasons, is batting .246 with two homers and 22 RBIs in 78 combined games with the Dodgers and Angels this season.
