Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told MLB.com that March 1 is a loose target date for Matt Kemp to play in spring training games. The center fielder underwent surgery on his left shoulder in October.
"I don't go definitely March 1 with Matt, because it might not be until March 5 or March 7 when he's ready to play. That doesn't mean anything's wrong," Mattingly told MLB.com.
He also said left fielder Carl Crawford, who is coming off Tommy John surgery, likely will make a later return than Kemp and that both probably will make their returns at designated hitter rather than in the outfield.
"Both guys I'll DH a little early on," he said. "Carl more likely [than Kemp]. He won't get into games until the medical tests [clear their participation]. I don't want him in a game and reacting and doing something like spinning to make a throw that we don't want him doing."
Kemp currently is participating in all baseball activities, and Crawford is on a limited throwing program, MLB.com reported.
