Hanley Ramirez doesn't play Monday

ST. LOUIS -- Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez did not play Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals after jamming his right shoulder Sunday, but Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was "optimistic" he would be back soon.

"He felt a lot better this morning," Mattingly said. "They didn't do an MRI today. They wanted to wait because if they do the MRI, they have to do the dye and that's going to make it worse. I know he's feeling better."

Meanwhile, Yasiel Puig returned to the lineup Monday after being held out of Sunday's game with a hurt left thumb. Puig, who went 1-for-4 in the Dodgers' 3-2 victory, injured his thumb while making a diving catch against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

"He felt a lot better," Mattingly said before the game. "He hit in the cage. They didn't come to me and say he can't go."

Mattingly said he talked to Ramirez, who jammed his right shoulder when he tumbled into the stands after a catch Sunday against the Cubs, and Ramirez said he thought he could be back within the week.

"He had a similar injury in the Dominican and was hitting within four days," Mattingly said. "He feels like this is less than that. His movement is a lot more today than it was yesterday, and we'll probably know more by the end of the day when he's done with treatment and things like that."

Dodgers medical services VP Stan Conte told Mattingly he wanted to wait 24 hours before Ramirez had an MRI because it would cause more discomfort now and set him back a few days. The Dodgers will see how Ramirez is feeling Tuesday and see whether an MRI is even needed.

"I think it's bruised right now," Mattingly said. "We're trying to wait 24 hours and then we'll see. We're fairly optimistic."

Also Monday, the Dodgers recalled shortstop Dee Gordon from Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned right-handed pitcher Stephen Fife to Albuquerque.

Gordon hit safely in his last 17 games with Albuquerque, batting .366 (26-for-71) since July 14, and overall is batting .307 with a Pacific Coast League-leading 44 steals to go along with 16 doubles, eight triples and a .398 on-base percentage in 80 games.
