Billups, who initially suffered the injury 10 days ago against the Kings in Sacramento, missed three games but returned to play 13 minutes against the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday night, putting up 11 points and two assists while hitting three of four 3-point attempts.
After Billups left the game against the Hornets early in the third quarter, Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro said the guard had aggravated his groin and that he wasn't sure when he would return.
Billups, 36, has played just 20 games this season, averaging 8.2 points and 2.2 assists, while battling through a variety of injuries. His latest injury could knock him out for the rest of the regular season with only nine games to play after Friday night. The Clippers expect to have Billups back for the playoffs, but they've also battled a constant lack of continuity this season with the veteran guard in and out of the lineup.
Willie Green will start in Billups' place Friday night, as he has for 52 games this season. Green, averaging 5.9 points and 0.7 assists, has hit 10 of his past 16 3-point attempts.
The Clippers also signed guard Maalik Wayns for the rest of the season Friday after previously signing him to two 10-day contracts. Wayns, an undrafted rookie out of Villanova, has appeared in three games for the Clippers, averaging 3.7 points and 2.3 assists.
