LOS ANGELES -- Former Florida Gators defensive back Josh Shaw will transfer to USC Trojans, his high school coach told ESPNLosAngeles.com Tuesday.

Jeff Williams, Shaw's former coach at Palmdale High near Los Angeles, said the ex-Gator has informed the Trojans coaching staff of his decision and plans to officially enroll at the school sometime this week, probably Thursday.

"He's very excited," Williams said. "He's very fortunate that he has a prestigious school right around the corner from him that is willing to accept him under these circumstances."

Shaw, who had 22 tackles in 10 games for the Gators last season, originally picked Florida over USC and LSU, among other schools. He was the 28th-ranked prospect in the ESPNU 150 out of high school and the fourth-ranked player in California.

A USC spokesperson said he could not confirm the transfer, although schools cannot typically confirm any transfers in or out unless the player has officially enrolled in the school.

Shaw plans to begin attending classes immediately after enrolling. The spring semester at USC started Monday; he has until Jan. 27 to start attending class in order to be eligible for spring practice in March.

He is expected to apply for a hardship waiver with the NCAA because of health problems within his family, which could allow him to suit up for the Trojans in 2012.

If it is not granted, he would begin the 2013 season as a redshirt junior and have two seasons to play.
