Lane Kiffin, Larry Scott talk
LOS ANGELES -- USC coach Lane Kiffin called Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott on Friday to explain his actions this week with the media, Scott said Saturday.
The Trojans' coach walked out of a post-practice news conference on Wednesday when a reporter asked about an injured player returning to practice, continuing an ongoing saga between Kiffin and the media in recent weeks.
USC adopted a new policy last month that prohibits reporters from disclosing injuries that occur at practice, then banned a reporter earlier this month for reporting on an injury that occurred in a game. The reporter was later reinstated.
Kiffin's walk-out Wednesday reignited the topic and led to the coach and Scott talking. Scott said last Saturday he was beginning to review the possibility of a conference-wide injury report because of all the controversy surrounding injury reporting in the Pac-12.
Kiffin read Scott's comments and brought them up in their conversation Friday.
"He knew I was concerned about what I was seeing and hearing and that there was some tension and frustration between the press and some of our coaches," Scott said Saturday, speaking at halftime of the USC-Cal game at L.A. Memorial Coliseum. "He called to make sure I was aware ... he wanted me to hear his point of view and explain to me what's happened here."
Scott said he did not have an opinion on whether a Pac-12 injury report would be a good idea.
"I don't have a position yet," he said. "Except that I feel that, given what I've seen, the conference should have a serious conversation about it and decide if a conference-wide policy is needed or if it's something better left for the schools."
A meeting of athletic directors is scheduled for early October, at which the issue will be discussed.
Scott said a ruling could be made immediately "in theory" but indicated it was unlikely there would be any changes before the 2013 season.
He said he has talked to the commissioners of the ACC, Big East and SEC about the feasibility of a conference-wide mandate. The ACC is the only one of the three with a policy in place.
