The move is retroactive to Saturday, Jan. 19 -- when Greene suffered the injury against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Kings' season opener.
TSN reported Monday night that Greene will be out for the season.
To replace Greene on the active roster, the Kings have recalled defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk from Manchester (N.H.) of the American Hockey League. Bodnarchuk participated in training camp with the Kings before he was assigned to Manchester last Friday.
Willie Mitchell, a defenseman who missed training camp and the first game of the season, practiced with his teammates Monday for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. Mitchell traveled with the team to Denver but will not play in Tuesday's game against the Colorado Avalanche.
The Kings also placed forward Anthony Stewart on waivers just eight days after acquiring him from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Kevin Westgarth. The Kings had 15 forwards on their roster with Stewart but needed to create roster space for defensemen due to the injuries to Greene and Mitchell.
Los Angeles Kings defenseman Matt Greene was placed on injured reserve Monday due to a back injury and could miss the remainder of the season.
