LAS VEGAS -- The U.S. Olympic basketball team said Saturday that guard Chris Paul's injury is a sprained right thumb.

Paul was hurt Friday during the first day of training camp and had an X-ray that revealed the injury. He took part in some non-contact portions of practice Saturday but did not scrimmage with the Americans.

"It'll be all right," Paul said. "It's a little swollen. Once the swelling goes down I can play through the pain."

The Los Angeles Clippers All-Star had a protective splint over the thumb and likely will sit out the next few scrimmages.

Paul said he'll be back in a couple of days and that he injured it trying to go for a steal. It was a re-occurrence of an injury he suffered in the playoffs, which was never publicly revealed. With the exception of his thumb, Paul said he feels "great."

"That's the most frustrating thing about the thumb is that everything else feels great," Paul said. "I took about two weeks off after the season got over and made sure I got everything back OK. My body is in great shape."

The U.S. team has been weakened by injuries to Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The Americans named their 12-man roster Saturday night.
