The Dodgers insist that while there is an outline for how they see Julio Urias' season progressing, there are no guarantees past the 19-year-old's debut Friday at New York. "He's at 90 pitches tonight, and after tonight we'll all sit down and evaluate going forward what is best for Julio as well as the organization," manager Dave Roberts said. So whether Urias starts in five days at Wrigley Field against the Cubs remains to be seen.

Asked if he cared to comment about his major league debut, Clayton Kershaw didn't even wait for a Julio Urias question to be asked. "He's just better. He's just better than I was at 19. Much better," Kershaw said about his teenage teammate, who will make his major league debut Friday. At 20-years old, Kershaw threw 102 pitches during his debut on May 25, 2008, giving up two runs on five hits of a no-decision against the Cardinals, while striking out seven.

Urias, Valenzuela have plenty in common

Julio Urias naturally draws comparison to Dodgers legend Fernando Valenzuela, and with good reason:

  • Both are from northern Mexico
  • Both are left-handed pitchers
  • Both are undersized (Valenzuela - 5-foot-11, Urias - 6-0)
  • Both were discovered by Dodgers scout Mike Brito
  • Both will have debuted at 19 years old

L.A. has good history with young lefties

At 19 years and 289 days, Julio Urias will become the youngest Dodgers left-handed pitcher to debut since Sandy Koufax in 1955 (19-176). The other three southpaws on this list combined to win seven Cy Young Awards.

Make plans to watch Julio Urias

The consensus second-best pitching prospect in the game will fill in for Alex Wood and become the first teenager to start a major league game since Felix Hernandez in 2005 (and Hernandez was the first since 1991). Five things we learned Thursday

Age has never been a factor for Urias

Julio Urias has always been much younger than the competition he's faced at each level of the minors and has still posted dominant numbers. The 19-year-old will make his major league debut on Friday.
