This Internet thing

Welcome to The Pulse, a new site from ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine.

Each weekday, we'll use the Internet to take the pulse of sports. Our lead columnists -- Steve Wulf, Gene Wojciechowski, Tim Keown, Alan Grant and David Fleming -- will offer up their views and dare you to respond. The Big Five gives you the first word on the big stories. Beat writers will chime in with updates on their Magazine departments, and we'll be cooking up all sorts of multimedia features, from Flash to video to 360-degree Total Access photos.

The Web is supposed to be a two-way medium that saves you time and makes your life easier, but that's not usually the case. Our Site Lines feature will help. We'll scour the Net for essential links to original opinions and the freshest and funniest dot-coms, nets or orgs. Every day at noon ET we'll send you out to these other sites, knowing in our heart of hearts that you'll come back for more.

While we can't knock down the walls of The Magazine's New York offices and let everybody in -- it's a big old department store building, and the landlord would be angry if we ruined it -- we plan to use e-mail to virtually do the same thing. Our writers, editors and photographers will be posting Pulsecards from their travels, taking you inside the story behind the stories. You can reply and get drawn into the chatter. Some of these people may occasionally bite, but they've all had their shots so you should be fine.

We hope you'll find The Pulse to be a worthy companion to The Magazine and dot-com -- we aim to be entertaining, different and unafraid to let you see us as we are. That ought to get the blood flowing.
