The ol' Lefthander

Them thar Rocky Mountains here in Boise are full of happy campers, and although I'm not one of them (here's to United Airlines, for losing my luggage!), Lefty Driesell is. The Southern drawl, the touch, the ears. For pure, raw quote, it's hard to top Lefty. "Ah tell ya," he tells meh, "Someone asked meh last night if we-ah Cinderella. Well, Ah said, we can't be Cinderella till we beat somebody."

Today, after his Georgia State Panthers beat somebody, stunning Wisconsin by scoring six points in 44 seconds to win, Lefty held up a slipper before his team -- something he had collected at Disneyland -- and said, "Now, we-ah Cinderella."

A conversation with Lefty is a wonderful thing, whether it's only with a few people or 50 sportswriters wearing mustard on their ties. As an unbiased journalist (except for the Missouri Tiger underwear), I try and root for only two things:

1) The team whose names are easiest to spell
2) The team with the best quotes.

With a roster full of names like Morris, Davis, Campbell, Terrell, Cooper, Patton and Long, not to mention the tongue of Lefty, go Panthers!

No?

Check Lefty at the mic.

Before the Wisconsin game: "At my age, all you can do is go to the bathroom and try to remember names."

After the Wisconsin game: "This is the greatest win Ah've evah had. ... Well, maybe it's not. Hell, I've been coachin' for 40 years. I say this [stuff] all the tahhhm."

On strategy: "We played a half-man, half-zone. We didn't know what we were doin', really."

I could go on -- and will.

Lefty on why he went to Georgia State: "Money, I guess. Mah wahf tol' me, 'Get a job, boy! Ah don't want you 'roun' the house.' "

The other day, Lefty and his wife were walking back from church when she turned to him and said, "This is the best team you've ever had."

Now, Lefty is proud of the Panthers' 28-4 record, but he wasn't ready for this. "We just left church, don't be lyin,'" he said. "Ah've been coachin' for 40 years."

"Yeah," Mrs. Driesell said, "but I've never had more fun watching anyone."

They're fun to listen to as well.
