Hooked

The Magazine's Bruce Feldman flew straight from the Midwest Regional in Kansas City to Austin, where he took in UT's spring practice.

Turns out the only thing more intimidating than the pile of swine that I had served to me last night at a Texas bar-b-q was the sight of the Longhorns' 6'6", 352-pound tackle, Mike Williams, pulling out in front of a tailback and getting up a frightening head of steam.

The All-America candidate, who is only a side of beans away from soon-to-be-first-rounder Leonard Davis in stature, rambled 30 yards downfield with the burst of a -- well let's not get carried away here -- tight end. Fortunately for the family of Ahmad Brooks, UT's 5'8", 180-pound corner was caught out of position and avoided a brutal collision.

But make no mistake: the Horns, back at spring practice for the first time in 11 days, were hitting. Three plays later, Brooks hammered a walk-on wide receiver on an out route, and then LB Aurmon Satchell started crunching ball-carriers. Texas' appropriately-named Thorpe candidate, Quintin Jammer, showed why he might be the nation's top corner as he locked up Roy Williams on a corner route that QB Chris Simms threw almost perfectly.

By the way, gusty 25-mph winds or not, Simms throws almost everything perfectly. The only college QB I've seen with a more impressive arm is Michael Vick. Chris Palmer, Dom Capers and a few other NFL scouts all were checking out what figures to be a top-five team this fall. From Mike Williams to 6'5" speedster Roy Williams to Jammer to Simms, UT has at least four players who should be top 10 picks when they come out.

The most astounding thing I saw yesterday? There were over 100 people out watching practice. Some colleges won't even get that for their spring games.
