Big Lover and Philly Cheesesteak. New Value Meal? No. Rap group? No.
Big Lover and Philly Cheesesteak are nicknames for Kevin Lyde and Ron Rollerson, the big bangers for Temple, a team that is turning the coffee-spilling upset into a yawning experience.
In the locker room after the Owls defeated Penn State Friday night, Big Lover, all 6'9" and 260 pounds of him, draped a towel over his massive shoulders and talked about his 18th double-double of the year -- 13 points, 13 boards along with 4 blocks -- then looked like he could hop up and go lift weights. Meanwhile, Philly Cheesesteak, all 6'11" and 300 pounds of him, worked away at a couple of sandwiches and Mountain Dews.
Philly Cheesesteak is huge. When he moves, it's more of an event than a step. Late in the first half, Penn State forward Gyasi Cline-Heard drove to the hoop and pump-faked Rollerson into the air. Usually, Cline-Heard would go up, draw contact, and shoot the And One. But when Philly Cheesesteak leapt, Cline-Heard seemed to freeze.
Time seemed to freeze, too. On press row, my flabber was gasted at how this giant man could hang in the air like smoke.
Cline-Heard looked scared. Instead of going up strong, he simply stayed crouched. Philly Cheesesteak, gravity starting to figure him out, started his descent. Suddenly, they were both on the floor.
I didn't know who might get the worst of this one.
Cline-Heard lay on the court in the fetal position, bracing himself for more shock than he actually endured. Rollerson flopped, rolled over and picked himself up. Both appeared to be okay.
Later, I asked one of Temple's players, Rouldra Thomas, about Rollerson and the play. "He's a better athlete than he looks," Thomas said. When you think about it, it's kind of amazing that Rollerson had the agility to avoid turning Cline-Heard into the world's largest roadkill. Another Owl, David Hawkins, said. "He's got great feet for someone his size."
Later, I learned that Rollerson is someone guys on the team turn to for a laugh or some advice. "You can talk to him about anything," Hawkins said.
For a big guy, he sure appears to have a soft touch.
