The sound floated through the Los Angeles air like smog. Every couple of minutes, at the NFL Rookie Premier, one or two players would start laughing hysterically as they heard it.

The sound was Mike Williams, Buffalo’s huge new offensive tackle, rolling around the Rose Bowl with a cordless mike. Constantly jabbering, Williams greeted anyone in his path with an overhead greeting instead of his customary pancake block. He’d be rambling on about, say, Joey Harrington, and players would stop and laugh before returning to their normal conversations.

Later in the afternoon Williams got his hands on a booming stereo system, and then it was really on. “This one’s for Antwaan Randle El!” Williams shouted as he played How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You. For NFLPA staffer Chartese Booty he cued up Bootylicious.

This sort of thing continued all afternoon, as the rookies went from station to station being photographed for their rookie cards. At the end of the session, they all posed for a group picture. And as soon as that was over, everyone attacked Williams, dogpiling on him and trying to rip his shoes off. Someone grabbed the mike from his hands and ran off.

When Williams finally emerged from the pile, he went after anyone he could find. He caught Randle El, the Steelers' second-round draft choice, and wrestled him to the ground, lying on top of him as if daring Randle El to breathe.

Finally, both of them got up -- both out of breath, and laughing. Then they went to eat.

Funny -- Williams didn’t reach for the mike the rest of the afternoon.
