Here's a little analysis of what went down today on the MLS trade front
today and I promise that tomorrow, as Gong Show host Chuck Barris used to say -- as the Boot Room gets wacky and flashes back to the '70s -- "We'll
be back with more stuff."
D.C. United:
More than the RDA of RDA
Said it, written it many times before. When Raul Diaz Arce isn't putting
balls in the net, all he does is drive his teammates crazy. Why? Because
he's got some of the worst feet in MLS when it comes to keeping the ball
for his team or making the simple pass. If he's getting on the end of
crosses and scoring goals, you put up with that. If he's not, you hope you
can find another team to take him on. So, Raul moves to Colorado to play
for his fifth team, D.C. gets the always popular "conditional" pick and
opens up a roster spot for left midfielder Stephen Armstrong. One thing to
keep an eye on: If Armstrong does the job on the left flank while Bobby
Convey is off at the Under-20 World Cup, will Convey be comfortable
sliding into a more central position? It says here he will.
Colorado Rapids:
No Longer Going to Agogo
Oh, the e-mails I received back in February when I listed Junior Agogo
among the players in MLS who should not "get too comfy." So outraged were
Junior's supporters. Well, hate to be an "I told you so." But hey ... Anyway,
the reason why Rapids coach Tim Hankinson has dealt Agogo to San Jose for Chris Carrieri (and essentially for Diaz Arce) is because in Diaz Arce,
the Rapids get a player who's known above anything for his commitment to
training. And in shipping Agogo out, they give up a player who's, well,
known for going completely the other way. Carrieri is a bundle of energy,
but will have to tone down his "I'm the Man" act, or else -- and I know
this is harsh for a rookie -- he will find himself moving around the league
on the Diaz Arce Frequent Traveler Program.
San Jose Earthquakes:
How Quickly Things Can Change
Remember when the No. 1 pick in the SuperDraft seemed like a big deal to
the re-building Quakes? Well, turns out, new coach Frank Yallop was able
to help his team in so many other ways -- with allocations like Dwayne
DeRosario and Landon Donovan and trades for veterans like Manny Lagos and Zak Ibsen -- he didn't need the No. 1 pick after all. So that pick, Carrieri, gets moved to Colorado for Agogo, who provides a little depth up front for those occasions when Donovan gets called up for various national
teams. This deal also gives the Quakes their full allotment of Senior
Internationals, so it looks like they'll hold or trade their final
allocation. They also had to cut Wojtek Krakowiak to make room for Agogo
(since they gave up a roster-exempt player in Carrieri) and that got me
wondering if Krakowiak, a Clifton, N.J. native, could be on his way to
Metro to see if he can give them a little cover for Clint Mathis ...
