Fired up
ESPN The Magazine

Louisville QB and Heisman candidate Dave Ragone will be keeping a diary in ESPN The Magazine and on ESPN.com throughout the season. Here is the latest installment.

Two days till the Florida State game and there's a lot of buzz around the whole city. Obviously, the Seminoles are a great team, and you don't want to say that beating them would make our season, but it sure would be great for the program.

Dave is ready to air it out against FSU.

Everybody here is really fired up. Especially the Florida guys we have on this team, because we've got like two dozen of them (23, actually).

Coach Smith said Monday we had the best day of practice we've had in a couple of years. I thought it was the first time in a while guys were hootin' and hollerin' and flying all over the place. It helps that we've got Eric Shelton. He's the all-world running back transfer we've got sitting out this season. Eric came from FSU. He is about 6'3", 235 and can really run. He's about the same size and speed as their running back Greg Jones and our D went up against him. Plus, Eric knows a lot of their personnel. He knows their strengths and their weaknesses and hopefully that'll help too.

On Monday, I probably spent an hour and a half in our meeting watching FSU tape, and then I probably watched another three hours by myself later that night. To be honest, the more you watch, the more impressed you become with them. Their D is fast and so athletic. They get in your face with their corners and try and jam you off the line. For me, I try and watch teams that run the formations that we run, so I watched the Duke and Maryland games a lot because they run a lot of one-back.

I also watched some of their game against Iowa State. In that game, I noticed Seneca Wallace made some plays outside of the pocket, and I realized that it's important I break contain to look downfield because that's when guys can come open. My goal is to just stick to the gameplan, make smart throws and don't try and be a hero.

This game should bring out the best in me and I really feel good about our gameplan. A big key, I think, is that we understand that they are gonna make plays. They have great players, but we can't get down if they score or create a turnover. If they make a play, we have to come right back and make a play.

We do need to feed off the emotion of our crowd though, but it's important that we don't lose perspective. We need to just have fun.
