ESPN.com, the leading sports site, has been honored with two awards – the prestigious 2002 Webby Award for outstanding excellence in the sports category and the People's Voice Award. The Sixth Annual Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, took place at a ceremony last night in San Francisco. The Webby Awards is a year-round effort measuring the best of the Web both in quality and in quantity.
Since the Awards began in 1997, ESPN.com now has been honored with three Webby Awards (1997, 2000 and 2002) and five People's Voice Awards (1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2002), each more than any other sports site.
"The fact that ESPN.com has once again been recognized as the top sports site by both critics and users alike is a real testament to our staff and their dedication to producing simply the best sports coverage out there. We couldn't be more pleased," said John Skipper, senior vice president and general manager, ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine.
ESPN.com was among five finalists, including 2002 FIFA World Cup (www.fifaworldcup.yahoo.com), Backpacker.com (www.backpacker.com), San Francisco 49ers (www.49ers.com) and Surfline (www.surfline.com).
Members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences nominate and vote among 150 web sites in 30 categories, including sports, news, travel, finance and politics. The People's Voice Awards are selected by the online community of Internet users who cast votes for their favorite web sites.
