ESPN.COM NAMED FINALIST FOR “GENERAL EXCELLENCE IN ONLINE JOURNALISM”

September 17, 2002

Online Journalism Awards Presented by Columbia Graduate School of Journalism And Online News Association

ESPN.com, the leading sports site, has been nominated as a finalist for the esteemed Online Journalism Award (OJA) for General Excellence in Online Journalism, which honors a site that "successfully fulfills its editorial mission, effectively serves its audience, maximizes the unique abilities of the Web and presents the highest journalistic standards." Presented by the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and the Online News Association, the third annual Online Journalism Awards will be presented on October 18 at a ceremony in New York City.

ESPN.com was nominated in the category of affiliated sites sites owned by or partnered with other media organizations with more than 200,000 unique visitors per month. Joining ESPN.com as finalists are MSNBC.com, NYTimes.com, WashingtonPost.com and USAToday.com.

ESPN.com's DraftCast application was also nominated for an OJA for Creative Use of the Medium, which honors the "best use of content, design, navigation, multimedia, interactivity, personalization and community in telling a story and serving users." DraftCast, which debuted during the site's coverage of the 2001 NFL Draft, is an interactive application featuring live pick-by-pick updates, live polls integrated with ESPN's telecast, and insight from ESPN analysts.

"This nomination is quite an honor for everyone at ESPN.com, and we couldn't be more proud," said Neal Scarbrough, vice president and editor in chief, ESPN.com. "Our fellow nominees represent the level of excellence these awards recognize, and it's a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff to be among them."
