O.J. Mayo's signature for USC early Wednesday was the culmination of months of anxiety for the Trojans' staff. USC coach Tim Floyd and assistant Bob Cantu worked tirelessly to get Mayo on board.

ESPN.com, like a few other outlets, reported in July that Mayo told the coaching staff he would sign with the Trojans. He was supposed to make a public announcement but never did -- either at the ABCD Reebok Camp in New Jersey, at the Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas or on a trip to USC.

So, of course, that led to rampant speculation that it wouldn't occur. But from the beginning, Mayo's people around him wanted him in a major media market. He's a one-and-done player, barring something unforeseen, and they want to maximize his exposure.
