Ball State yet to hire coach

July, 24, 2007
A few nuggets:

• Ball State, another MAC school, is taking its sweet time in replacing Ronny Thompson, who resigned at the beginning of this month. Athletic director Tom Collins is taking this week to go over resumes and is expected to start conducting phone interviews later this week. Originally, the favorite was Indiana assistant Ray McCallum, a former Ball State player and coach. But Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson said Tuesday he doesn't expect McCallum to go, even if offered. IUPUI coach Ron Hunter is in the mix, but the longer this drags on the more likely he may withdraw, especially if the hire isn't done until August. Collins worked with Rob Evans at Arizona State. But Evans, now an assistant coach at Arkansas, plans to stay put. Purdue assistant Cuonzo Martin, former Saint Louis coach Brad Soderberg and Wisconsin assistant Greg Gard remain viable candidates.
