The original goal of creating a third postseason tournament was to give the schools not selected for the NCAA and NIT tournaments another opportunity to play.
A year ago, Washington, Connecticut, Akron, Iowa and Saint Louis all felt like they were going to play in the NIT. None received an invite. Washington actually laced up its sneakers, dressed in practice gear, watched the NIT selection show and was anticipating heading out to the practice court -- before the Huskies found out they were snubbed.
