Arizona State coach Herb Sendek saw the matchups of the Maui Invitational last season and assumed the Sun Devils would get quality power-rating points.

Playing Illinois first was a given for a boost. And even if the Sun Devils lost, which they did, then playing Princeton and LSU would help, right? Not quite. Going 2-1 against that field didn't do much for the Sun Devils in March when the NCAA tournament selection committee met. None of the three teams the Sun Devils played made the NCAAs. Neither did ASU.
