Christian Laettner jersey at auction
A jersey believed to have been worn by Christian Laettner when he took what is arguably the most famous shot in college basketball history is hitting the auction block.
Lelands.com, an online auction house, says it is selling the jersey that the former Duke Blue Devils forward was wearing for the famous moment in the East Regional Finals of the 1992 NCAA Tournament when he caught an inbounds pass from Grant Hill at the free throw line and hit the turnaround jumper as time expired to beat the Kentucky Wildcats by one in overtime.
The reigning champion Blue Devils went on to successfully defend their title.
The owner of the jersey has asked to remain anonymous, but the auction house showed ESPN.com a notarized letter in which the consigner says he had a relationship with Laettner, who gave him the jersey when the season concluded. Lelands.com officials said they also matched the jersey to up-close pictures taken of Laettner's uniform for the game.
Attempts to reach Laettner for comment were unsuccessful.
Lelands.com has set the reserve price for the jersey at $100,000. The highest price paid for a game-used basketball jersey is believed to have been a Virginia Squires jersey worn by Julius Erving that was sold for $250,000 by SCP Auctions.
Other items in the auction, which went live last week and closes on Jan. 10, include Jackie Robinson's 1947 Rookie of the Year Award, the 1996 AL MVP Award given to Juan Gonzalez and the World Series MVP and ring given to former Marlins pitcher Livan Hernandez in 1997.
The auction also includes a game-used pair of skates and a stick that the auction house says was used by Gordie Howe in his rookie season and a silver medal from the 1980 Olympics that was awarded to a member of the Soviet Union hockey team that lost to the Americans in the famous "Miracle On Ice" game.
