Joel Embiid's out against TCU
Self said the 7-foot freshman, projected by some as the top pick in June's NBA draft if he elects to leave college, had an MRI on his back and would need to work out Friday in order to play Saturday.
"It didn't come back with anything major," Self said of the MRI. "He'll be back soon. It's not going to be long."
Self said Embiid is feeling better after missing practice all week.
"A lot of times there's no reason to hold guys out if they're healthy, too. We'll make that determination in the next few days," Self said Thursday.
Embiid injured his back in the waning minutes against West Virginia on Feb. 8, but Self said he has also been battling a knee injury for the past couple weeks.
Embiid, who is averaging 10.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 22.3 minutes per game, has been struggling the past few games and seen his offensive production and minutes drop. He's averaging 7.5 points in 17.3 minutes the last three contests.
Kansas is coming off a 85-82 overtime loss Monday night at Kansas State (Embiid played 18 minutes), and the team has four days off prior to the game against TCU.
The Jayhawks are 18-6 overall and in first place in the Big 12 with a 9-2 record.
