Kentucky fans flood State Street, 31 arrests made

Kentucky Wildcats fans took to the streets of Lexington after the team's 71-64 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, lighting small fires and smashing bottles.

Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts told The Associated Press that about 1,500 fans spilled into a State Street neighborhood adjacent to the university's Lexington campus after Saturday night's game. She said police dressed in tactical gear allowed fans to mingle but removed anyone who became disobedient. Roberts said pepper balls were used to break up one fight.

Authorities made 31 arrests for alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct, with those to be arraigned as early as Monday. The Lexington Courier-Journal, also reported that three people were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Law enforcement officers doused burning wads of paper with water from a nearby embankment. Street sweepers were used to disperse the crowd about 2:15 a.m.

Roberts said police are "thankful no one was seriously injured and that there was no major destruction of property."

The Wildcats close the season at 38-1 -- two wins short of becoming the first undefeated team in college basketball since the 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers.
