Andre Drummond to play as walk-on

STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut freshman center Andre Drummond is not on scholarship and is instead attending Connecticut this season as a walk-on.

Kyle Muncy, a spokesman for the athletic department, told reporters Tuesday that Drummond is not receiving any institutional aid from UConn.

Drummond and Michael Bradley started the semester with neither paying for tuition as it was being determined which one would be on scholarship and which would be the walk-on.

Initially, Bradley was willing to give up his scholarship but apparently it wasn't deemed to be possible.

Meanwhile, Drummond pursued a manner in which to get a loan.

Throughout the fall semester, the two took classes, participated with everything on the team, and both had an outstanding invoice.

Ultimately, one had to pay tuition and Drummond was the one who handled the loan rather than Bradley.

"It took the better part of a couple of months to get it a conclusion, which was reached at the end of October," Muncy said. "It only came to light now because Andre said he was a walk-on."

UConn has only 10 scholarships this season after losing one because of NCAA violations and two more because of a poor academic performance rating.

The 6-foot-10 Drummond, who is averaging 9.4 points a game, decided to enroll just three days before the start of the fall semester. Bradley, a redshirt freshman, has been sidelined with a fractured right ankle.
