Pirates coach Kevin Willard announced Monday that the former Seton Hall Prep star would be returning to New Jersey.
The brother of recent Pittsburgh graduate Ashton Gibbs, Sterling Gibbs averaged 2.6 points and 7.5 minutes in 30 games for the Longhorns. He had a career-high 14 points against Nicholls State on Dec. 13.
Seton Hall went 21-13 last season and made the NIT.
Gibbs will have a better chance at playing time with the Pirates. The rising sophomore played sparingly as a freshman on a Longhorns team that had just nine scholarship players, and Texas signed Javan Felix, a point guard rated 72 in ESPNU's top 100 players, in the fall. Felix is expected to be the backup to Myck Kabongo, who decided not to enter the NBA draft after his freshman year.
