Davidson turns down CAA invite
Davidson will remain in the Southern Conference after turning down an invitation to join the Colonial Athletic Association.
"It's obviously a very good outcome for the conference," Southern Conference commissioner John Iamarino told ESPN. "Davidson's decision greatly helps stabilize our membership."
Southern Conference member College of Charleston also has an invitation to join the CAA. Charleston's board of trustees will vote Friday on the school's future conference affiliation.
Iamarino declined to comment on Friday's vote.
Charleston and Davidson were extended invitations to join the CAA, which is trying to compensate for the loss of three members in the never-ending conference realignment.
In the past few months, VCU (Atlantic 10), Old Dominion (Conference USA) and Georgia State (Sun Belt) announced they were leaving the Colonial.
VCU joined the Atlantic 10 this fall, while ODU and Georgia State will join C-USA and the Sun Belt, respectively, next fall. If Charleston leaves for the CAA, it would join in the 2013-14 school year.
The loss of VCU, ODU and Georgia State leaves the CAA with nine members.
