Did Brown resign because of failed power-play attempt?

Jeff Goodman suggests coach Larry Brown's desire for a five-year deal with SMU -- and the school's unwillingness to commit long term -- played a role in Brown's resignation Friday morning.

Will it be another 50 years?

That's about how long it had been between AP Top 25 finishes for SMU. Larry Brown ended the drought; will new coach Tim Jankovich keep the team in the polls at season's end?

Stats & Info

What can Larry Brown do for you?

Win games, for starters. But the wins have been tainted with NCAA violations at each stop. He was at his best when winning a national championship at Kansas, but he certainly wasn't too shabby at SMU or UCLA.

The best of times and the worst of times

With Larry Brown, SMU experienced both. The program under his watch had high highs but also had low lows.

Brown the bad boy?

With Larry Brown, you know you'll get victories, because the coach has been a winner in both the college and NBA ranks. The problem is, you might also get NCAA violations, which SMU found out the hard way in September 2015.

Statement from SMU AD Rick Hart: "I want to start by saying that we are saddened by the tragic events that occurred in our city last night. Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted and the Dallas community. While something like this puts athletics in perspective, media inquiries require that I address this morning's news. "We offered Coach Brown a long-term contract through 2020 and hoped he would continue to serve as head coach. This morning, however, I was notified by his agent that he would be stepping down. Coach Brown was able to accomplish so much in his four years on the Hilltop, including leading us to our first conference title since 1993. He has left his mark on SMU basketball, and we are thankful for what he's done. As Director of Athletics, I'm also thankful to the search committee that brought us Coach Brown and for their plan that will allow us such a smooth transition to Tim Jankovich. I have the utmost confidence in Tim based on both his coaching resume as well as my time working with him here on the Hilltop. I know he will keep our program among the nation's elite, and I look forward to the seasons ahead." – Rick Hart

Hall of Fame coach Brown stepping down at SMU

SMU had offered Larry Brown a contract that ran through 2020, but sources told ESPN that Brown wasn't satisfied with the terms of the deal, leading to his resignation Friday.

Just spoke with SMU's Larry Brown:" I'm stepping down." When I asked why? He said, "I've got nothing else to say right now. I have to text the parents of my players." Asked if there was a health issue, he said "I'm OK." Tim Jankovich has been the head coach designate since he left being the head coach at Illinois State to come with Brown to Dallas. So Jankovich will take over. He coached the Mustangs during Brown's nine-game suspension last season as a result of an NCAA penalty.
