Plumlee, Duke learning from hard-fought win over UNC Wilmington (1:22)

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

After beating UNCW, Mike Krzyzewski said his team was nervous early. Grayson Allen says they weren't. Krzyzewski corrects him, "they were nervous." Allen adds, "As the game went on, we started to play like the free and confident team that we've been all year. You can't be thinking about losing and what if, what if. You have to enjoy the moment."

Plumlee ditches mask, lifts Duke past UNCW

Marshall Plumlee ditched the mask guarding his broken nose and responded by scoring a career-high 23 points to lead defending national champion Duke past UNC Wilmington 93-85.

Duke's stars shine vs. UNC Wilmington

Brandon Ingram was one of three Blue Devils to score at least 20 points in the 93-85 win. It's the first time Duke did that since the 1990 Elite 8 vs. Connecticut with Alaa Abdelnaby, Phil Henderson, and Christian Laettner. Box score

Plumlee not on the floor for finish

Marshall Plumlee's career-high 23 points lead Duke but his fifth foul deprives the Blue Devils of their lone big man down the stretch. Duke leads by 5 with under one minute remaining. Follow live

That fifth foul on Plumlee could be huge here. He was the go to offense for Duke late

For all of Duke's flaws (depth, interior defense, rebounding) it turns out you can get away with a lot when you have a 6-foot-9 lottery pick who has, in the course of one game, scored from everywhere, handled against the press, skied for rebounds, and assisted on alley-oops. Brandon Ingram: useful.

Duke smothering the Seahawks

UNC Wilmington has had 24 fouls called against it as foul trouble looms. Duke's Brandon Ingram has 18 points and 8 rebounds with under eight minutes left in the game. Follow live

Krzyzewski not happy with his team after that turnover. This is an educational timeout, so to speak. He knew he had UNCW ready for a knockout and the Blue Devils let then back in.

Duke's three big tournament letdowns

Duke was on the losing end of three of our top 10 NCAA tournament upsets. Can the Blue Devils avoid another upset loss? UNC Wilmington is hanging in there. Biggest upsets

Duke starting to dominate inside

Two UNC Wilmington players have four fouls with about 15 minutes remaining in regulation. UNCW was the third worst team in D-I in FT rate on defense this season. Duke is already in the bonus for the rest of the half. Follow live

Seems like Marshall Plumlee was given a pep talk at the half. Much more active early. With Gettys at four fouls, Duke would be foolish not to go at the rim all day. Have such an advantage there

Duke in unfamiliar position at the break

Duke is down by 3 at halftime. They only trailed at the half in one of its previous 17 NCAA tournament games (2013 Elite 8 vs. Louisville). The Blue Devils lost that game. Halftime box score

Andy Katz ESPN Senior Writer

I've seen this before: Mercer over Duke in Raleigh to open the tournament. UNC Wilmington aggressively putting Duke on its heels with quick run outs, timely shots. But Brandon Ingram and Luke Kennard made sure UNCW doesn't get too comfortable with late 3s. Settle in for a likely tight second half.

Dana O'Neil ESPN Senior Writer

During yesterday's press conference, UNCW coach Kevin Keatts was asked to compare his team to Louisville, where his mentor Rick Pitino built the Cardinals on a frenetic press and defense. Keats said his team wasn't as big as the Cardinals. What he failed to mention was how flat-out fast his guards were. The tempo, coupled with their fearlessness and ability to push the pace is what's given UNCW a 43-40 lead at the break. Absolutely just beating Duke in transition. But don't ignore the value of that 3 at the buzzer by Ingram. Big shot

Jeff Borzello ESPN Staff Writer

Besides the fact UNCW's Chris Flemmings is a D2 transfer and walk-on, it's worth noting that he probably doesn't get anything more than a bench role if former Jacksonville transfer Jarvis Haywood doesn't get dismissed prior to the season. Now Flemmings is an all-CAA player and go-to-guy for an NCAA Tournament team.

Plumlee has chucked his mask. Said at press conference yesterday it didn't bother him.
