West coast, best coast?

When it comes to the tournament, not so much. Of the seven Pac-12 teams to make the tourney, five were knocked out in the first round. Utah is the only team to have won so far, but top-seeded Oregon plays tonight. Can they make up for the rest and hang with the best?

You shouldn't judge a conference by the one-game sample size offered by the NCAA tournament. Or at least you shouldn't do that ordinarily. But the Pac-12's 1-5 record -- and most crucially the fact that all five losses came to lower seeds -- does little to counter the sentiment that the league's beautiful RPI was built on savvy scheduling more than performance.

Purvis spurs UConn comeback over Colorado

Rodney Purvis, Daniel Hamilton and a stifling defense carried Connecticut back from an 11-point first-half deficit, giving the Huskies enough for a 74-67 win over Colorado.

Sterling Gibbs was ice at the line in the final minute for UConn. Huskies win 74-67.

Strong second half propels UConn to win

The No. 9-seeded Huskies outscored 8-seed Colorado 45-31 in the second half to win their first-round matchup 74-67 despite Buffaloes F Josh Scott's game-high 23 points. Box score

UConn (-3.5) and over bettors (total anywhere from 131 to 136) were sweating, but Huskies win and cover 74-67 thanks to late free throws.

It's a win in the brackets and maybe UConn's March magic is back. But that was a very shaky last three minutes against the Colorado press. Loss by the Buffaloes means teams outscored in conference play are 0-2 so far (CU and Texas Tech).

Life from Colorado. Buffs were dead, but it's 66-63 after two Xavier Toton free throws with 60 seconds left. Hang on.

UConn pulling away here behind Daniel Hamilton and Rodney Purvis. Lead is 65-53 with 3:05 to play. Don't mess with the Huskies in March.

Huskies surge out of locker room

The 9-point halftime deficit has been cut to 2. Colorado is 8-of-17 on free throws, which could come back to haunt the Buffaloes. Follow live

More life from UConn to open the second half in Des Moines, but Colorado had an answer. The Buffaloes won't be intimidated. They are playing like the team that expects to win. Lead is 42-33 at under-16 timeout.

UConn down 9 at half

71.1 percent of ESPN Tournament Challenge brackets have UConn beating Colorado, the highest percentage for a higher-seeded team in this round. Those bracket owners did not like the first half from Des Moines. Halftime box score

Colorado having much more success against a very good UConn defense than the Buffaloes had on offense against the Pac-12. Shooting 55 percent on your 2s against the Huskies isn't easy, and Josh Scott's wearing out Kevin Ollie's team on the interior. Impressive start for the Buffs.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

The Buffs go to the locker room with a 36-27 lead on the strength of a shooting and rebounding edge. Colorado is just playing better than UConn, which is disjointed offensively. Its defense picked up behind Amida Brimah, who blocked two shots late in the first half.

Mitch Sherman ESPN Staff Writer

Colorado forward Josh Scott is giving UConn trouble. He keyed an 11-2 run by the Buffs, who are taking a 10-point edge into the final two minutes of the first half.

Colorado building a lead vs. Huskies

The Buffaloes are winning the battle on the boards and all-Pac-12 player Josh Scott has 9 points in the early going. UConn's bench has scored 12 of its first 22 points. Follow live

UConn's Jalen Adams said he got a confidence boost from his 65-footer last week against Cincinnati. It showed as he calmly buried a 3 at the shot-clock buzzer 12 minutes into the first half. Back-and-forth first half in Des Moines between the Huskies and Colorado.
