Father and son split in a baseball rarity

OTTAWA -- Tim Raines and his son, Tim Jr., both came out winners Tuesday in their first regular-season games as opponents.

Raines Sr. went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Ottawa Lynx in a 4-3, eight-inning loss to the Rochester Red Wings in the opener of an International League doubleheader. Tim Raines Jr. was 1-for-3 with a single.

In the nightcap, Raines Jr. went 1-for-4 with a double as the Red Wings won 5-4 in 10 innings. Senior was 0-for-4.

"I think it was a push," Tim Raines Sr. said. "We're 1-and-1. Our main goal is to do it in the big leagues."

The game between the Triple-A affiliates of the Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles is believed to be the first in modern baseball history involving a father and son facing each other during a professional regular-season contest.

"We set goals three or four years ago to do that," Raines Sr. said. "We want to be the second father-son to play in the big leagues (at the same time). It looks like we're going to have an opportunity next year."

Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. played together with Seattle but never against each other.

Raines Sr. outdid his son March 6, getting a pair of run-scoring singles in Montreal's 7-6 spring-training loss to Baltimore at Jupiter, Fla. Raines Jr. had one hit for the Orioles in that game.

"Spring training is a little different," said Raines Sr. "He only played three innings and I played four or five."

Tim Raines and his son were to have faced each other here Monday, but the game was postponed because of rain and lightning.

Raines Sr., a seven-time All-Star, is on a rehabilitation assignment with the Lynx. He had arthroscopic surgery May 31 to repair a torn biceps tendon in his left shoulder.

Father and son exchanged their team's lineup cards before Tuesday's opener.

"It was a great day," Raines Jr. said. "It was another learning experience. Every time he got up there, I was watching every little thing he was doing."

Raines Sr., 41, led off the first game with a double to left-center that bounced off the wall. He grounded out in the third, flied out in the fifth and walked in the seventh.

Raines Jr., 21, had an infield single in the first and stole second, just missed beating out a bunt in the fourth. He was a sixth-round pick in the 1998 amateur draft.
