LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- Philadelphia Phillies prospect Gavin Floyd threw a no-hitter in the Lakewood BlueClaws' 1-0 loss to Lexington on Wednesday night, with two errors leading to the run.
Lexington's Charlton Jimerson scored in the sixth inning after leading off with a bunt up the first-base line that Floyd fielded and threw into the runner for an error.
Jimerson stole second base and moved to third when catcher Ben Margalski's throw to second sailed into center field for an error. Reinaldo Ruiz then followed with a sacrifice fly.
Floyd, the Phillies' top draft pick in 2001, struck out eight and walked one in the South Atlantic League game.
''I felt my fastball tonight and I went after them,'' the 6-foot-5 right-hander said. ''I wasn't letting up.''
Floyd (8-7) retired the final 12 batters for the first nine-inning no-hitter in the Class A team's history.
''That was about as much of a dominant game as I've seen in a long time,'' BlueClaws manager Jeff Manto said. ''To go through that lineup the way he did is utter dominance. We couldn't get our situation hitting tonight. ... It's bittersweet.''
Keith Bucktrot had a seven-inning no-hitter for Lakewood last season in the second game of a doubleheader against Hickory. |
