On Cal's night, Orioles end losing streak

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- On the night that Cal Ripken got his 3,000th hit, the Baltimore Orioles ended a four-game skid with a 6-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Ripken's historic hit Saturday night came in the seventh off Hector Carrasco, a line drive to center field just one pitch after Albert Belle scored from third on a passed ball by rookie Matthew LeCroy.

Trombley a regular to 3,000
Baltimore relief pitcher Mike Trombley has seen this before.

When Cal Ripken collected his 3,000th hit Saturday night, it was the fourth time that Trombley witnessed the milestone.

"Three of my teammates have done it now," Trombley said after getting his first save. "And I threw the other one."

Trombley played for the Twins when teammate Paul Molitor hit No. 3,000 in 1996 and when Dave Winfield did it for Minnesota in 1993. On June 30, 1995, Trombley gave up Eddie Murray's 3,000th hit.

"I've been joking with Eddie about it all week," Trombley said of Baltimore's first-base coach. Murray was the first person to greet Ripken after his historic single.

Like Ripken, Murray and Winfield reached 3,000 at the Metrodome. That means, Trombley was on the field each time the milestone took place in Minnesota, and four out of the 24 times it has happened in baseball history.

"I'm a big baseball fan," Trombley said. "I'm a fan of trivia, so it's really neat."

Belle had doubled off Travis Miller (0-2) and advanced to third on Harold Baines' groundout that brought Ripken to the plate and the crowd of 18,745 in the Metrodome to its feet.

The crowd gave Ripken, who went 3-for-5, a two-minute ovation.

B.J. Surhoff's solo homer off Mark Redman in the ninth made it 6-4.

Tim Worrell (2-1) picked up the victory with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Former Twins closer Mike Trombley pitched the ninth for his first save.

Mike Bordick's RBI single in the first and Charles Johnson's fifth homer, in the second, put Baltimore up 2-0. After Ripken singled in the fourth, Jeff Conine knocked in a run with another single for a 3-0 lead.

Corey Koskie hit a two-out, two-run triple off Calvin Maduro in the bottom of the inning and he scored on Ron Coomer's double, tying it at 3.

Surhoff's RBI single in the fifth gave Baltimore a 4-3 lead, but the Twins tied it again in the bottom half when Torii Hunter led off with a triple and scored on Todd Walker's single.

Game notes
Tony Gwynn is the only other active member of the 3,000-hit club. He's 18th all-time, just behind Cap Anson. ... Bordick has hit in all 11 of the Orioles' games.
