RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Jeff Kent hit a three-run homer in the 11th inning and the San Francisco Giants beat New York 8-5 Wednesday for their third straight victory over the Mets.

Marvin Benard opened the 11th with a single off Turk Wendell (2-1) and Barry Bonds walked on four pitches. Kent followed with his seventh homer of the season into the left-field stands.

Felix Rodriguez (1-0) pitched one inning for the victory as the Giants won for the ninth time in 11 games. They got back to .500 (13-13) for the first time since the sixth game of the season.

New York tied it at 5 in the seventh on a two-run triple by Melvin Mora that skipped past Bonds in left field.

The Giants had taken a 5-3 lead by scoring three runs in the sixth on four walks and two singles, chasing Mets starter Mike Hampton _ who left the game after giving up bases-loaded walks to Doug Mirabelli and pinch-hitter Ramon Martinez.

San Francisco earlier had RBI singles by Kent in the first and Bonds in the third.

Jon Nunnally led off the game for New York with a homer. Derek Bell had a run-scoring single in the third and Todd Pratt had an RBI double in the fourth.

It was another tough outing for Hampton, who entered the game with an 8-0 career record against the Giants. Hampton, traded to the Mets in the offseason after going 22-4 for Houston last year, allowed five runs on six hits and six walks in 5 1-3 innings.

The two-run rally in the seventh by the Mets saved Hampton from his fifth loss of the season.

Giants starter Russ Ortiz allowed three runs on six hits in six innings.

Notes: It was the third time Nunnally has led off a game with a homer. The other times came in 1998, when he was with Cincinnati, and in 1995, when he was with Kansas City. ... The Mets are 2-4 on a 13-game trip, their longest since another 13-game trip in 1995. ... Mets catcher Mike Piazza missed his fifth straight start with a bruised right wrist and a hyperextended right elbow, but doubled as a pinch-hitter in the eighth. He is expected to return to the starting lineup Thursday against the Giants. ... The 4:05 p.m. PDT start time was one of two such late afternoon weekday game times at Pacific Bell Park this season. ... Aaron Fultz pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings for the Giants, the longest outing by a San Francisco reliever this season.
